An Interview With David Colver

An interview with David Colver, Social Media Manager for LG UK. We find out what’s the most successful content he’s ever developed and who we should be reading and following in social.

What does a day in the life of a Social Media Manager for LG UK look like?

With so many business units to deal with including gaming, TV, Home Appliances, IT and the B2B side, it’s incredibly busy! But reviewing content, social listening, strategies for product launches and gaming ambassadors / influencers, working with our partnerships to make the most of potential collaborations and looking for ways to make the LG brand stand out amongst competitors. There’s so much more that goes into looking after a brand like LG on social media. Also let’s not forget the daily lunch time table tennis battles.

What are the perks of the job?

Working with a team that challenges each other to deliver the best in class marketing strategies. I’ve worked in some organisations previously where the team just doesn’t click and there’s constant bickering which isn’t helpful for anyone, certainly not the company.

What are the biggest struggles you find managing Social Media accounts in 2023?

I’m sure everyone says it but the constant changes the platforms have to algorithms and also just general updates. It’s incredibly hard to stay up to date with everything so I’d recommend allowing some daily time to read the articles on Social Media Today

What is the most successful bit of content you have worked on?

Success can be defined in many different ways. In terms of views, we’ve created content that takes 10 minutes to make and gets millions of views whereas a piece of content that takes days to create and edit doesn’t get as many which leaves you stretching your head. My advice is learn, learn and keep learning what works for you.

How did you get into working in Social Media in the first place to get to where you are now?

I was working as a digital marketing exec at an agency but wanted to move into social media so I looked at ways I could try to gain experience. I tweeted Billy Wingrove from the F2 Freestylers around the time their clothing brand launched asking if they needed any help managing their social channels and that I’d noticed they weren’t being that active especially given the clothing brand had just launched. To cut a long story short, Billy got in contact saying they were looking for someone, so I worked for free for 6 months which led to a part time role whilst still in my full time job and then became a full time member of the F2 brand which was a crazy ride through so unbelievable growth with all of their ventures. Put yourself out there, you never know where it may lead.

Last question, what is an account that everyone should go and follow now?

I can’t name just one as there’s too many good ones but Elfried Samba (ex Head of social at Gymshark, Grace Andrews (Head of content for Steven Bartlett), Pretty Little Marketer & Matt Navarra
