This is a permanent and a three-day or 24 hours a week role.  The General Communications Officer is a member of the Union’s communications and media team and will support the Union’s internal and external communications strategy, write and disseminate communications and publicity material, respond to public and social media inquiries, and coordinate union events.

As a member of the communications and media team, the General Communications Officer:-
Reports to the General Secretary and works under the direction of the Senior Communications (and Media Relations) Officer.

Assist the Senior Communications (and Media Relations) Officer in developing overarching strategies and tactics for effective communications and ensure that they are executed per the Union’s strategic and operational plans.

Interacts regularly with Union secretaries, organisers, administrators, and members of the Union and can be called upon to provide communications and media-related services as needed.

Responsibilities
Develops and maintains various communications channels and materials.

Write, edit, and distribute content, including publications, press releases, website content, annual reports, speeches, and other union material that communicates the Union’s activities, campaigns and services.

Monitors the Union’s social media page, media alerts and relevant publications.

Create interactive social media content and campaigns.
Produces needed content and script for union videos.

Writes Union E-News and announcements on key developments.

Ensures all contents comply with the union standards and style guides.

Creates timely reports for all communication campaigns.

Perform any other communications and media relations duties as reasonably required by the Union secretaries from time to time.

Qualifications or Job Requirements

Outstanding written and oral communication skills

Proficient in MS Office and various social media applications

Knowledge of social media strategies and best industry practices

Creative, innovative, and detail-oriented

Graphic design, photo and video editing skills are a plus

Excellent work ethic

A can-do attitude and an alignment with Union’s values, including a commitment to collaboration and supporting our diverse communities.

Knowledge of and willingness to demonstrate Union’s commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The successful applicant will commence the role as soon as possible.
